A unique contemporary document of the Soviet revolutionary period and the first large-scale production of its young film industry. Controversially discussed and evaluated differently for a hundred years, the film has become a model for many SF films thanks to its imagery and equipment. The engineer Los's daydreams about the Martian princess Aelita, the failure of his marriage and his deteriorating living conditions result in the construction of a spaceship and the flight to Mars, where a revolution occurs to overthrow King Tuskub's slave-owning society.
