Anno Domini 1327, last week of November, in a rich Benedictine abbey on the slopes of the Apennines. Brother William of Baskerville (Sean Connery), a learned Franciscan from England, arrives as the emperor's special ambassador on a delicate mission: he is supposed to organize a highly political meeting between minors suspected of heresy and emissaries of the Pope.
But his stay in the abbey soon turns out to be a time of apocalyptic horror. William and his assistant Adson (Christian Slater) witness the most miraculous and strange events and deaths for an abbey. William is gripped by investigation fever: he is far more interested in unmasking the murderer than in the dispute between the emperor and the pope, and in the process he delves deeper and deeper into the secrets of the abbey. And he has to hurry: his worst adversary Bernardo Gui (F. Murray Abraham), a merciless witch and heretic hunter, believes the devil is at work behind the incidents and quickly found his scapegoats...
