The life of 12-year-old David, who lives in a sleepy American suburb, changes suddenly in the summer of 1958 when the sisters Megan and Susan are placed in the care of their mentally unstable Aunt Ruth, a neighbor of David, after their parents' accidental death. He quickly becomes friends with the pretty Megan, but Ruth and her three sons only treat her with contempt. When their behavior worsens and physical attacks occur, Megan calls the police. The situation escalates and Ruth's abuse, in which her sons also take part, increases. Soon all the neighboring youth become complicit in the sadistic torture. David, who also witnesses the atrocities, decides after much hesitation to free Megan from her ordeal...
