After a young girl disappears without a trace, his investigations lead investigator Neil Howie (Edward Woodward) to Summerisle, a remote island off the coast of Scotland. The mysterious village community, led by the strange-looking mayor Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee), seems anything but pleased about the uninvited guest and remains silent. But Howie cannot be shaken off easily. However, the strange behavior of the locals, who indulge in a pagan fertility cult, makes the devout sergeant increasingly uneasy. His instincts are not wrong - the community is involved in a deadly conspiracy. (2 Blu-rays)
Robin Hardy's directorial debut brings together Equalizer series hero Edward Woodward, Bond girl Britt Ekland and legendary horror film veteran Christopher Lee in one of his best roles. With its atmospheric locations, disturbing images and haunting soundtrack, Hardy gradually builds up one of the most terrifying and iconic high points of modern cinema. The unconventional cult film based on the brilliant screenplay by Anthony Shaffer relies on a mix of crime film, experimental horror and a pinch of musical and was awarded the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film in 1978.
